Much like the dark era of General Sani Abacha when state power attempted to force a civilian transition upon an unwilling populace a familiar political script is unfolding under President Bola Tinubu. Despite widespread public disaffection with his leadership style, his administration appears determined to retain power at all costs.

At the center of this push is Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, acting with an air of absolute infallibility. In a bold declaration, Wike vowed to deliver far more than the constitutionally mandated 25% of FCT votes for Tinubu in 2027, boasting, “What you saw in 2023 will be totally different in 2027.”

However, Wike’s grandstanding reveals a glaring blind spot regarding Nigeria’s political history. Power in Nigeria has rarely yielded smoothly to political arrogance or state coercion. Abacha’s brass-knuckled grip vanished overnight, and the seemingly invincible PDP fell in 2015 despite its self-proclaimed “50-year rule.”

Wike’s dismissal of opposition figures like Peter Obi ignores a fundamental truth: political tides shift when public discontent peaks. History shows that those who claim to see and control all are often the most blindsided when the people finally speak.
