Members of an Islamic group have reportedly made open demands for AK-47 rifles to carry out attacks against individuals labeled as “infidels” in Enugu and Jos. This brazen call to violence has sparked widespread anxiety across the affected regions, raising urgent concerns about public safety, communal harmony, and national security.

What is most troubling to many observers and citizens is the apparent silence and inaction from relevant authorities in response to these explicit threats. In an environment where hate speech and incitement to violence pose severe risks to peaceful coexistence, the lack of an immediate, decisive crackdown by security agencies has fueled growing frustration.

This situation raises critical questions regarding the equal application of the law. If similar threats or demands for high-caliber weaponry had been publicly voiced by other regional, ethnic, or religious groups, the official response would likely have been swift, decisive, and uncompromising. High-profile arrests, immediate military or police raids, and public condemnations would almost certainly have followed to deter potential lawlessness.

The apparent disparity in enforcement creates a worrisome perception of double standards within the justice system. For law and order to prevail, the rule of law must be applied impartially, regardless of a group’s identity or affiliation. Security forces must address all incitements to violence with equal urgency to restore public trust, prevent retaliatory actions, and ensure safety for all citizens across Enugu, Jos, and the entire nation.
